  • Discussion

Tapogomea tomentosa Aubl., Pl. Guian. 1: 160. pl. 61. 1775, not Psychotria tomentosa Hemsl. Biol. Cent. Am. Bot. 2:51. April, 1881.

Cephaelis tomentosa (Aubl.) Vahl, Eclog. 1: 19. 1796.

Uragoga tomentosa (Aubl.) O. Kuntze, Rev. Gen. 1: 301. 1891.

Uragoga tomentosa (Aubl.) K. Schum. in Engl. & Prantl. Naturk Pflanzenfam. IV. 4: 120. 1891. Callicocca tomentosa (Aubl.) Gmel., Syst. Nat. 1: 371. 1791.

Cephaelis hirsuta Mart. & Gal., Bull. Acad. Brux. 11(1): 135. 1844, not Psychotria hirsuta Sw., Prodr. Veg. Ind. Occ. 42. 1797.

The well-known, widely distributed Cephaelis tomentosa (Aubl.) Vahl, when transferred to Psychotria, is a later homonym of Psychotria tomentosa Hemsl., published four months earlier (April instead of July) in 1881 than Psychotria tomentosa (Aubl.) M.-Arg. The next available epithet, which refers to the taxon having spreading dense pubescence of the midrib and lateral nerves of the lower side of the leaf blades, is Psychotria poeppigiana, which Müller-Argoviensis published at the same time that he proposed the combination of Psychotria tomentosa.
