When transferred to Psychotria, this species must receive a new epithet. Bremekamp placed this taxon in the genus Gamotopea, since the pyrenes lack a longitudinal rib or groove.
The two large outermost bracts are situated at the apex of the peduncle and subtend the inflorescence at the basal insertion of the axes. Other bracts subtend the lower part of each of the three main axes. An individual flower may be subtended by three undulate and crisp-margined bracts 3.5-5.5 × 0.3-1 mm, or a single bract of the ultimate forks of the inflorescence may subtend one or two flowers, but no individual flowers are subtended on both sides by bracteoles.
