Discussion
The branches of the inflorescence and infructescence in this taxon are alternately racemosely disposed, whereas in P. barbiflora A. DC. they are umbellately or sub-umbellately arranged or subverticillate, all arising from the same or near the same part of the main rachis. The bracts subtending the main axes in P. brachybotrya are solitary instead of verticillate or subverticillate, as in P. barbiflora, and are ovate to oblong-lanceolate, acute to obtusish, 4.5-9 X 2-3 mm, the lower bracts being the largest. Although the corollas were originally described by Müller-Argoviensis as pubescent without, they vary from glabrous to pubescent without. The Rusby & Squires 65 and 206 were identified by Standley as Psychotria involucrata Sw., under which name they have generally passed in herbaria.
