Type. Kibihiu Creek, Wiruni River, Berbice River, British Guiana, heavy bush fringing muri bush, 9 Feb 1938, D. B. Fanshawe 39 (Forest Dept. no. 2638).

This species is distinctive in having completely sessile terminal heads of flowers arising between the bases of the petioles, and large, foliaceous, expanded and flaring calyx limb. It is related to P. nudiceps Standl. of Peru, but that species has a shorter calyx not flaring at the summit and shorter corollas. From P. cephalantha (M.-Arg.) Standl. it may be distinguished by the larger heads of flowers, larger calyx and hypanthium, larger corollas, and longer petioles. From Mapouria japurensis M.-Arg. it differs in the non-lanate calyx which is not 5-fid, the larger corolla, and the rounded to subtruncate instead of abruptly aristate stipules.
