Discussion
Lonicera alba L., Sp. Pl. 175. 1753.
In the following treatment of this taxon, I have considered the principal variations in relation to the Linnaean type, starting from an elongated, many-flowered inflorescence having a well-developed peduncle through a reduction series with few-flowered inflorescences, shorter peduncles, and reduced leaf size. In their extremes, these variations have been interpreted by some workers as distinct species. Nevertheless, so many intergradations are evident, induced either by ecological factors, possible genetic instability, or hybridization, or a combination of these, that it is possible to find transitions between the taxa previously placed in the specific category.
