Type. Base of Serra da Neblina, Camp No. II, Río Tucano, Rio Cauaburí, Rio Negro, Amazonas, Brazil, alt 257 m, 1 Dec 1965, subligneous 1.5 m high, leaves pale beneath, calyx lobes persistent, pale green, Bassett Maguire, Julian Steyermark & Celia K. Maguire 60295 (holotype NY, isotype VEN).

This taxon is characterized by its sessile flowers which are partially adnate on one side at their hypanthium bases. The calyx lobes are much larger, as are also the fruiting hypanthia, than in either A. venezuelensis or A. intermedia. The shallow-based 3-5-awned stipule is similar to that of A. intermedia, but at variance with the large entire, lanceolate stipules of A. venezuelensis, while the papillate-puberulent hypanthia are similar to those of A. intermedia, but at variance with the densely appressed-strigillose to sericeous hypanthia of A. venezuelensis.
