Discussion
West Indian material conforms to the plate and description by Jacquin (Select. Stirp. Am. 96. pl. 66. 1763) and is here interpreted as subspecifically different from the material originating from portions of southern Brazil, Bolivia, and Colombia. Specimens from Venezuela mainly conform to the West Indian pattern of variation, but show some intergradation with other South American plants.
