Description
Distribution and Ecology - Distribution. Only known from a few collections gathered in the northeastern part of the Amazon Basin and in Suriname on well-drained places in the understory of dense forests often on hill or mountain sides at lower elevations.

Bactris constanciae is among the Bactris species at once distinguished by its very characteristic and unusual fruits. The fruit is depressed globose and covered with fleshy bristles, yellowish when immature, turning red and finally dark violet at maturity, about 2 cm long and 2.5 cm in diameter including the bristles. This species which is mainly known from the original collections made by Barbosa Rodr. and Trail about a century ago and a few recent Suriname specimens is up to now only found at low elevations. Since it did show a preference for hill and mountain-slopes in Suriname it is supposed to reach at least an altitude of about 600 m in that country. It is mainly mentioned here because its unusual fruits which make the species so interesting among its congeners.
