Description
Species Description - In this aphyllous species, involucral leaves were examined instead of leaf blades of regular leaves. Involucral leaves nearly flat, with a median costa prominently convex beneath. Surfaces. Median adaxial portion consisting of 3- or in part 4-layered swollen translucent tissue (Fig. 35); component cells mostly longitudinally oblong. Epidermal cells of both surfaces low, transversely rectangular. Hypodermis present under adaxial epidermis, most of the component cells sclerified. Mesophyll divided by longitudinal rows of vascular bundles and accompanying sclerenchyma, each section differentiated into chlorenchyma and translucent mesophyll. Translucent mesophyll occupying most part, consisting of thin-walled large cells. Chlorenchyma scanty; palisade chlorenchyma 2- to 4-layered, with scattered few small fiber strands especially in the middle layer; assimilatory cells of adaxial layer longitudinally oblong; cells of other layers slightly irregularly oriented, tending to be round or oval. Spongy chlorenchyma 1/4 to 1/5 as thick as entire mesophyll; cells of 2 or 3 abaxial layers crowded, oblong or elliptic; cells of other layers loosely arranged, some conspicuously lobed leaving small intercellular spaces (Fig. 33).Vascular bundles. Except in the median costal region 2 or 3 large and small vascular bundles arranged in longitudinal rows, a single small vascular bundle present between rows of twin or triple bundles, each oval or elliptic in outline. Bundle sheaths double, the inner sheath of thick-walled cells complete, the outer sheath of thin-walled cells interrupted adaxially or at both ends by sclerenchyma. Four or more metaxylem conducting cells markedly large, angular in transverse section. Sclerenchyma. Adaxial vascular bundles supported by an adaxial I-shaped girder. Abaxial vascular bundles with an abaxial crescenti-form girder. Middle vascular bundles of triplets with narrow girders at both ends. Median costal vascular bundle completely surrounded by well-developed sclerenchyma (Fig. 35).
