Discussion
In working up Calliandra for the Flora Brasiliensis, Bentham evidently recognized that Spruce’s collections from the vicinity of Santarem were quite distinct from those of C. purpurea of the West Indies. In proposing C. tenuiflora he observed that the stamen tube is longer and the leaflets larger than in the otherwise similar C. purpurea. Subsequent collections have extended the range of C. purpurea to Colombia (Dept. Magdalena, La Jagua, Haught 3557; Rio Cesar, Dawe 635), but as yet no stations have been found even near Guiana. C. tenuiflora has been known hitherto only from the type locality. The present collection is from a small population of shrubs ca. 2-3 m tall in wet hogwallowed sandy clay soil at the edge of a small forest-surrounded savanna. Except for somewhat more copious pubescence on the stems, leaves, and calyx, this material closely agrees with Spruce’s Santarem specimens. Smith 3168, from the Kanuku Mountains of British Guiana, and distributed as C. purpurea, is referable to neither that species nor the present one.
