    Distribution and Ecology - Widespread species east of the Andes in tropical South America; also reported from Trinidad.SURINAME. Wilhelmina Gebergte, forested ridge, lower slopes of Frederik Top, H. S. Irwin, G. T. Prance, T R. Soderstrom & N. Holmgren 54584 (y. fr NY) .

    For a discussion of the relationships of A. firmula and its close affinity with A. muca, see the earlier comments (Mem. N.Y. Bot. Gard. 10(5) : 51. 1964) Steyermark 86414, a branchlet with a single fruit and young flowering material, possibly may belong here. It was collected in Venezuela, Bolivar, in mostly level forest along trail E of pica 101, 5-7 km E of E. Crucero, ESE of Villa Lola. The collector gives the vernacular name “Jabon.”
