    Aniba riparia (Nees) Mez

  • Discussion

    Aydendron riparium Nees, Linnaea 21: 497. 1848.

Type. “Am Ufer des Flusses Pomeroon im brittischen Guiana. Rich. Schomburgk n. 1405,” (isotype, lf. & fl. fragm. F).

It is with some hesitation that I have assigned these specimens to A. riparia, for they do not accord in every detail with the description, and the isotype material is fragmentary. W ithin the group of species to which the above has been assigned by Kostermans, whose monographic revision is cited above, there appears to be a great deal of similarity vegetatively. This is true not only of the alternateleaved entities but of the subverticillate representatives as well. Steyermark’s fruiting specimens from Imataca might very well represent any one of several species not seen to date in the fruiting stage.

  • Distribution

Widespread tree to 15 m bearing alternate, chartaceous, dull green leaves, paler beneath, elliptic or obovate-elliptic on somewhat slender branchlets, occurring in the Guianas, in Brazil south to Rio de Janeiro and west into Colombia and Peru, and possibly in Venezuela in the Amacuro region.
