  • Scientific Name

    Aniba hostmanniana (Nees) Mez

  • Description

Distribution and Ecology - One of the most variable of the small trees found growing on river margins in the Guianas and neighboring Amapa, Brazil; and common, according to Kostermans, in Amazonas, Brazil, in the region of Manaus.

  • Discussion

    Aydendron hostmannianum Nees, vars. a & (3, Linnaea 21: 499.1848

Type. Suriname. Hostmann 155 (isotype, fl. var. a, F); 1117 (isotype, fl. var. ß F, NY).

Vernacular Names. Waikarra Pisi, et al (See Kostermans) (Suriname); (Taki-Taki) :Bambi-Apici (French Guiana).

The specimens cited here are similar in structure and habit to those currently collected in Suriname, and more closely related to the type of the variety ß (No. 1117) of Nees. Because of the scarcity of material from the areas concerned with this species, as well as the lack of fruit-bearing specimens, I shall not at this time attempt to make a separation of the several entities which seem to be involved in this extremely variable species, a situation not unique in the present study. Kostermans has selected Hostmann 155 as the representative type of the species. In the light of further material and the extreme variability noted by me in the field, it is my opinion that var. a is not typical, but seemingly is a very young branchlet tip with small leaves, as is so often found to obtain in this family.
