    Description - Tree 6-20 m tall with wide-spreading branches, the branchlets glabrous or densely minutely malpighio-strigulose, glabrescent; stipules caducous to persistent, glabrous or minutely malpighio-strigulose externally; leaves unifoliolate, the petioles and petiolules terete, glabrous or minutely malpighio-strigulose, the blades (6.5-) 8-15(-21.5) cm long 3-5.5(-6) cm wide, elliptic to lanceolate-elliptic, the base acute to rounded-obtuse, the apex abruptly acute to caduate-acuminate, glabrous and pale greenish on the upper surface, glabrous beneath or grayish and densely malpighio-strigulose minutely, the venation obscure and the costa impressed on the upper surface, the costa and the primary veins more or less salient on the undersurface; inflorescences racemose, axillary, fasciculate or sometimes several arranged in a panicle, (2-)4-10(-19) cm long, the axis densely malpighio-strigulose minutely, the bracteoles persistent, glabrous or minutely malpighio-strigulose externally; pedicels 2-4 mm long, densely malpighio-strigulose minutely; buds globose to oval in outline, glabrous or minutely malpighio-strigulose basally; calyx segments 4, deciduous, glabrous, black on the inner surfaces; petal yellow, glabrous, the claw 3-5 mm long, the blade rounded to suboblate, (4-)5-7 mm long, 5-7 mm wide; larger stamens 2-6, glabrous, the filaments 7-9.5 mm long, the anthers oblong to oval, 1-1.5 mm long, 0.5-0.7 mm wide, the smaller stamens glabrous, the filaments 3.5-5 mm long; gynoecium glabrous, the stigma punctiform, the style 0.5-1.5 mm long, the ovary 3-4.5 mm long, 1-1.5 mm wide, narrowly elliptic.

  • Distribution

    (Figs. 21, 22). Non-inundated, riverine forest, 0-250 m alt., in the upper Amazon Basin of Brazil, Colombia, and Peru, and also at the mouth of the Amazon River.
