Description
Distribution and Ecology - VENEZUELA. Bolivar: Auyan-tepui, cumbre de la parte sureste del brazo noroeste (division occidental del cerro) : faldas sobre piedras igneas, vecindad del "Rio Lomita Camp," 1800 m alt., in moist rich mossy forest of quebrada northwest of Rio Lomita Camp, epiphyte on tree, leaves dull green above, also purple on some blades, 12-13 mm wide, flowers orange with brown-red streaks. May 10, 1964, J. A. Steyermark 93634; same locality, summit, about 1700 m alt., between Drizzly Camp and Yellow Trees, in very dense elfin forest and near Rio Lomita Camp, about 1800 m alt., in elfin forest, G. C. K. Dunsterville 873; Ptari-tepui, 2100-2285 m alt., on densely forested, steep, south-facing slopes overlying sandstone, between "Cave Rock" and base of high sandstone bluffs, October 30, 1944, Steyermark 59540 (type) ; Chimanta Massif, southwestern edge of Apdcara-tepui, 1600-1800 m alt., on branch in moist mossy forest near Camp 4, leaves coriaceous, rich green above and paler beneath, flowers madder-purple and lavender, April 15, 1953, Steyermark 75029; Chimanta Massif, Central Section, 2185-2210 m alt., on open forested laterite slopes along tributary of east branch of headwaters of Rio Tirica, "Lvs. olive, divaricate. Upper sepal orange with brick-red stripes, the flower otherwise dull orange," February 13, 1955, J. A. Steyermark & J. J. Wurdack 834 (determination probable, for flowers are old) ; Chimanta Massif, Torono-tepui, 1760-1880 m alt., on slopes of Middle Falls of Rio Tirica below Summit Camp, occasional on branches of Clusia forest, peduncles and bracts pale green, "sepals orchid with pale greenish-yellow margins and tips; lateral petals and lip dark orchid," March 1, 1955, Steyermark & Wurdack 1212.
