Description
Genus Description - The infraspecific taxa of Lomatium graveolens have been regarded as bipartite, the Nevada and westem Utah specimens being treated as var. alpinum and the more mesic materials, from central and northem Utah and adjacent Idaho and western Wyoming as var. graveolens ( D o m & Hartman, 1988). M u c h ofthe Nevada material has purple petals and purplish staminal filaments, but the flowers and schizocarps are small. All the specimens of var. graveolens examined at B R Y have yellow flowers and large schizocarps. Collections taken from Zion and Kolob canyons in Washington County, Utah have large purple-black petals and large schizocarps. They ordinarily have the lower leaves temate-pinnate as in var. alpinum from Nevada. It is these specimens, which combine characteristics ofthe other two varieties, that are here designated as var. clarkii. The species is outlined in the following description and a key to the varieties is presented.
