    Type collection. J. S. Blanchet 3117 (lectotype NY; isolectotypes BM, BR, C, G, GH, K, KIEL, LE, MG, P), Olhos d Agua [Felizado?], Baia, Brazil, 1840. A lectotype is necessary because Harms cited two collections at the time of the original description of the taxon as a species. This collection is more widely distributed in herbaria than the other and the specimens are as complete.

    Description - Tree 15 m tall, the trunk 6 dm diameter; leaf rachis with a wing to 3 mm wide, the leaflets rounded and usually more or less retuse apically; axis of inflorescence strigulose to tomentose, the buds usually strigulose; filaments of the 2-4 larger stamens glabrous; gynoecium sometimes bipistillate, sericeous, the hairs short and strictly appressed; fruit 7.5-11.5 cm long, 5-6.5 cm wide, densely cinnamon-brown-strigulose, glabrescent, verruculose, never costulate transversely, 1-3-seeded, the seeds rounded in outline, ca 3 cm diameter, the aril fleshy.

    (Fig. 15). Primary or secondary forest of eastern and southeastern Brazil, on non-inundated, often rocky soils, infrequently in savanna forest, in northeastern Para, northern Goyaz, and generally distributed from the coastal region into the interior of Maranhão, Piauhy, Ceará, Baía, and southernmost Minas Gerais.
