Description
Genus Description - The systematic position of this genus was discussed and the one species of northern South America described in Fieldiana Bot. 2 9: 507-511. 1963. The genus probably comprises no more than 3 or 4 species, including the one treated below, and the recently described Siphoneugena reitzii Legrand, a native of southern Brazil. All the species as far as known are montane, occupying humid mountain forests. 1. Leaves mostly 3-5 cm long, usually about twice as long as wide, elliptic-ovate; buds 3.5-4.5 mm long; free parts of the calyx-lobes 0.5-0.7 mm long; style 4-6 mm long; Lesser Antilles; Guayana Highlands (Amazonas and Bolivar, Venezuela). S. densiflora var densiflora. 1. Leaves mostly 5-7.5 cm long, 2.5-4 times as long as wide, mostly narrowly elliptic and acute at both ends; buds 5-6 mm long; free parts of the calyx-lobes 1mm long; style 7-8 mm long; Cerro Venamo, Bolivar.
