  • Discussion

Myrtus monticola Sw., Prodr. Veg. Ind. Occ. 78. 1788.

Widespread in the West Indies, this species ranges also from Mexico to northern Colombia, Venezuela and the Guianas; cf Fieldiana Bot. 29: 432, 1963. Amshoff (Fl. Suriname 3(2): 121. 1951) described the Suriname representative as Eugenia monticola var racemosa, stating that the raceme-rachis was 1-2 cm long. The Colombian and Venezuelan E. micrantha H.B.K., which may logically be included in E. monticola in the broad sense, m a y also have the raceme-axis 1 c m long or more. The axis in the specimens cited below varies from 6-12 m m in length. Apparently this feature is not very important taxonomically.
