description see Urban (Bot. Jahrb. 19: 618. 1895). This is an easily recognized and not very variable species, common and widely distributed in the West Indies. According to Berg (Mart. Fl. Bras. 14(1): 343, 344. 1857), it ranges as far south as Rio de Janeiro. Eugenia ligustrina var hebecarpa Amsh. (Fl. Suriname 3(2): 117. 1951) is known from Suriname.
