  • Description

Description - Large tree, the young branchlets densely puberulous, the hairs of two types (microscopic peltate hairs, and much longer but minute, subulate ones); stipules not seen; petioles ca 5.5 cm long, terete, estipellate, densely puberulous with micro-peltate hairs and minute subulate hairs; rachis ca 22.5 cm long, densely puberulous, estipellate; leaflets 5-jugate, the petiolules 11-12 mm long, densely puberulous, the blades elliptic to narrowly elliptic, acute at the base and apex, the lowest pair with blades 10.5 cm long, 5.5 cm wide, those of the other pairs progressively longer toward the leaf apex, 13.5-18.5 cm long, 6-7 cm wide, glabrous above, densely puberulous beneath with a preponderance of micro-peltate hairs but with an admixture of minute, subulate hairs, the costa impressed on the upper surface, salient beneath, the primary veins plane; inflorescence ramuligerous, racemose, 7.5-22.5 cm long, densely puberulous, the minute, subulate hairs obscuring the micro-peltate hairs partially on the axes and completely on the calyces, the bracts persistent, ca 1.5 mm long and wide, triangular, densely puberulous externally, the bracteoles persistent, arising near the pedicel apex, ca 1 mm long and wide, triangular, densely puberulous; pedicels 7 mm long, densely puberulous; buds globose, ca 9 mm diameter, densely puberulous; calyx segments thick, glabrous within; petal claw ca 5 mm long, the blade more or less oblate, ca 18 mm long and 20-25 mm wide, sparsely pilose on the veins externally; larger stamens 2-4, glabrous, the filaments 15.5-18.5 mm long, the anthers narrowly oblong, 1.5 mm long, the smaller stamens glabrous, the filaments 10-12 mm long, the anthers oval-oblong, 1 mm long; stigma obtuse; style glabrous; ovary 7-9 mm long, 2 mm wide, narrowly elliptic, densely puberulous, the hairs micro-peltate and subulate; gynophore 10-14 mm long, glabrous; fruit not seen.

  • Discussion

The similarity of the leaves of this incompletely known species to those of S. schomburgkii might result in confusion of vegetative material but the mixture of subulate hairs with micro-peltate ones permits the easy separation of this species from all the other taxa of this alliance. Unlike the typical variety of S. schomburgkii, the ovary is densely pubescent, a characteristic shared with S. schomburgkii var. guayanensis.
