  • Family

    Menispermaceae

  • Scientific Name

Anomospermum reticulatum subsp. dielsianum (Moldenke) Krukoff & Barneby

  • Description

Species Description - Leaf-blades glabrous or minutely setulose beneath along primary nerves; reticulation elevated on both faces, but much coarser beneath (areoles ± 1-1.5 mm diam) than above (areoles ± 0.4-1 mm diam); fruiting peduncles 6-12 mm long, 1.8-2 mm diam below incrassate apex; drupe attached obliquely but basally, subsymmetrically oblong-eUipsoid, 2.7-3 ("3.5") cm long, 1.8-2 cm wide in dorsoventral section, 1.6-1.8 cm thick, the exocarp (orange when ripe) ± 1 mm thick, the mesocarp mucilaginous, thin; endocarp 2.6-2.8 (? more) cm long, 1.5-1.7 cm wide, the woody testa 0.8-1 mm thick in section, smooth externally except for the delicate incised reticulation, the interior of seed-cavity undulate-veiny, with slender dorsal wing 0.5 mm wide intruded into the endosprm (Schunke 1969/9).

  • Discussion

    Anomospermum dielsianum Moldenke, Brittonia 3: 37. 1938.

The drupe of subsp. dielsianum, described here for the first time, is essentially like that of the thin-shelled phase of subsp. reticulatum. The two subspecies, the ranges of which overlap in middle Amazonian Brazil, are distinguished therefore only by strikingly different reticulation pattern of the leaf-blades.

Schunke 1969/9 is a voucher for sample of wood for chemical studies.
