    Description - Tree with minutely strigulose branchlets; stipules deciduous, 7-8 mm long, 1.5-3 mm wide, lanceolate, acute, minutely strigulose externally; petioles terete, 12-16 cm long, minutely strigulose; rachis 12-19.5 cm long, minutely strigulose, stipellate at each pair of leaflets; leaflets 2-4-jugate, coriaceous, the petiolules 3-5 mm long, minutely strigulose, the blades oblong to oblong-oval or obovate-oblong, the basal pair 11-13 cm long, 6.5-8 cm wide, the blades of the other pairs 14-18.5 cm long, 7-9.5 cm wide, the base rounded, the apex usually truncate-obtuse and slightly emarginate broadly, infrequently rounded and bluntly acute, glabrous on the upper surface, minutely strigulose beneath, the primary venation conspicuous, the costa and primary veins slightly impressed above, strongly salient beneath; inflorescence 8-11 cm long, racemose or sparingly branched panicles of racemes, ramuligerous, the axis densely strigulose, the bracts persistent, 3-3.5 mm long, 1 mm wide, acute, oblong to oblong-elliptic, minutely strigulose externally, glabrous within, the bracteoles lacking; pedicels 9-12 mm long, minutely strigulose; buds globose, 7-8 mm diameter, minutely strigulose; calyx segments 4 or 5, glabrous within, minutely strigulose externally; claw of the petal ca 2 mm long, glabrous, the blade obovate, the base cuneate, ca 6.5 mm long and wide, glabrous; large stamens 4, glabrous, the filaments ca 12 mm long, the anthers 4 mm long, 1 mm wide, oblong, apiculate to ca 0.3 mm, the smaller stamens glabrous, the filaments ca 6.5 mm long, the anthers ovate, apiculate, 1.5 mm long, 0.8 mm wide; gynoecium sericeous, the style 1 mm long, the ovary arcuate-linear, ca 6.5 mm long and 1.5 mm wide, the gynophore 6 mm long; fruits not seen.

  • Discussion

    There is considerable similarity between this species and S. cardiosperma, which has differently shaped leaflets, pubescent filaments (the larger stamens), and is geographically disjunct.

  • Distribution

    (Fig. 7). Known only from the type collection which was collected along the banks of the Rio Beni, Bolivia.
