    Type. Venezuela, Linden 1498.

This species is very close to S. asperula (Ball) Wernh. of Colombia, which is found at low altitudes slightly above or near sea level, has shorter, inconspicuous or no bracts, an d shorter corolla-tube. Although Standley (Field Mus. Publ. Bot. 7: 387. 1931) states the type to be Funck & Schlim 624 from Carabobo, Venezuela, Wernham (Monogr.
