Genus Description - The distinction between Actinostemon and Gymnanthes is very vague. In Actinostemon the number of stamens is more indefinite, mostly more than 3, in (lymnanthes more definitely 3, rarely 2.

Discussion
Type. G. lucida Swartz, Prodr. 96. 1788 (West Indies, southern Florida). Distribution. The West Indies (8 species), Central America (2), Upper Orinoco (1). Center of development in the West Indies, with 3 outliers in Mexico and one in the Upper Orinoco area. Absent from the Hylaea and Brazil.
