Distribution and Ecology - All our specimens come from the Rio Negro and Upper Orinoco, none from British Guiana. BRAZIL. Amazonas: Manaos, prope Barra, Oct 1851, R. Spruce 1820, Dec. 1854, 3774 (types of Bentham’s var tomentosum, NY); Manaos, Mata do Aleixo, terra firme, Mar 1945, Froes 20542 (NY) ; Rio Uaupes, Panure, caatinga, 15 Nov 1947, Murca Pires 1039 (NY). VENEZUELA. Amazonas: prope Esmeralda, ad flumen Orenoco, Dec 1853, R. Spruce 3219 (NY, photo from B); Rio Cunucunuma, savanna edge, Culebra, 27 Nov 1950, Maguire, Cowan & Wurdack 29776 (NY).

Type. Klotzsch quotes only one specimen: “British Guiana, (Roraima?), Schomburgk 114" Later Bentham split the Klotzsch species into two varieties and quoted Schomburgk 114 under his var tomentosum, but added under this variety also a specimen from “Capoeiras, near Barra do Rio Negro, Spruce.” Miiller-Argoviensis quotes Schomburgk 114 from herb. DC.
