1. Amphilophium Kunth, Jour. Phys. Chim. Hist. Nat. Arts 87: 451. 1818. Lectotype. A. paniculatum (L.) H.B.K. Endoloma Raf., Sylva Tell. 79. 1838. Type. E. purpurea Raf. = A. paniculatum (L.) H.B.K. This is a well-marked genus of lianas characterized by an irregular frilly outer calyx margin and thick inner calyx, bilabiate tubular pseudocleistogamous flowers which do not open spontaneously, six-angled branchlets, woody elliptic fruits, and a usually dendroid tomentum. The genus ranges throughout tropical America. A single species is known from the Guayana Highland.
