    Latin Diagnosis - Planta perennis gracilis dense caespitosa, radicibus atropurpureis fibrosis. Vaginae basilares aphyllae vel 1-8 cm longae fusco- vel rufo-purpureae, ore oblique secto. Folia anguste linearia laete viridia 20-35 cm longa circiter 2 mm lata plicata apice acuta basi vix attenuantia. Culmi ad fasciculos foliorum laterales graciles triquetri foliis altiores 30-60 cm alti basi 1- vel 2-foliati infra medium vix 1 mm crassi 2- vel 3-nodosi, internodiis 7-10 cm longis, laeviusculis vel ad angulos scabriusculis. Inflorescentiae partiales 3 vel 4 remotae singulae umbellato-cymosae simplices et plerumque ex parte subcompositae, eae superiores bracteas suas excedentes; pedunculi graciles longe exserti; rami plures subcapillares usque ad 3 cm longi umbellula vel capitula terminati; bracterolae setaceae; capitula maturitate fulva hemisphaerica vel turbinato-globosa 2-3 mm in diametro 2-5-spiculata. Spicae compositae 2.25 mm longae; glumae primae 4, infima tantum vacua hyalina subrotunda, superiores 3 herbaceae late ellipticae 1.5 mm longae viridi-carinatae fulvae subacutae spiculam partialem masculam axillarem gerentes et fructificatione excedentes. Fructificatio fi.e., spicula partialis foeminea) ter-minalis ellipsoidea 1.5-2 mm longa 1.25-1.5 mm crassa; utriculus tenuiter hyalina maturitate fulvescens pilis albo-sericeis dense pubescens, rostro recto ca 0.33 mm longo glabro, ore truncato raro bidentulo disco depresso albido plus minus spongioso. Stigmata 3.

    Calyptrocaryae glomerulatae ut videtur similis sed ab hac fructificationibus trigynis paulo minoribus extus dense sericco-pilosis, culmis quam folia multo longioribus, inflorescentiis bracteas suas longe excedentibus et habitu plerumque aphyllopodico sat cognoscenda.

    Type. Partly submerged, locally abundant in savannas, 2 km south of Rio Chibau, right hand bank, at 100 m alt, Alto Rio Cuyuno, Bolivar, Venezuela, Sept. 1,1962, Bassett Maguire, J. A. Steyermark & C. K. Maguire 53533 (holotype NY). Paratype. BRITISH GUIANA. Ite Bog, 1 mile cast of Onoro, mouth, 650 ft alt, Forest Dept, of British Guiana Herb. Record no. 7415 (no collector’s name noted) (NY).
