    Species Description - Plants medium-sized in somewhat glossy, yellow-green, lax mats. Stems creeping, to ca. 10 cm long; pseudoparaphyllia narrowly foliose; in cross-section with 4-6 rows of small, colored, thick-walled cells surrounding larger, thin-walled, hyaline cells, central strand none. Leaves erect-1 spreading to spreading, slightly contorted when dry, ovate, (1.0-) 1.2-2.0 mm long, gradually acuminate, the extreme apex sometimes with a 1/2 twist; margins plane, serrulate above or almost: throughout; costa short and double, one fork often longer than the other; cells long-hexagonal, ca. 8-10:1, firm-walled, smooth, becoming shorter in the acumen, porose near the insertion; alar cells restricted to extreme basal angles, not reaching the costa, in 3-5 rows, the basal row often ± inflated. Autoicous. Perichaetia along stems, conspicuous; leaves laxly erect, oblong-lanceolate, to 2.5 mm long, gradually and broadly acuminate; margins often incurved at midleaf, serrulate above; ecostate; cells linear, thick-walled, sometimes porose, becoming thinner-walled and rectangular toward insertion. Setae slender, erect, reddish, 5-6 mm long, smooth; capsules erect, short-cylindric, 1.5-2.0 mm long; exothecial cells short-rectangular with thick vertical walls and thin horizontal ones; operculum obliquely conicrostrate; annulus of 1-2 rows of quadrate, firmwalled cells; peristome double, exostome teeth on front surface cross-striolate with overlying papillae below, densely papillose toward middle, laxly coarse-papillose above, trabeculate at back; endostome with medium-high (3-4 cell rows) basal membrane, segments slender, keeled, narrowly perforate, finely roughened, about as long as the teeth, cilia apparently none. Spores spherical, finely papillose, 17-23 µm in diameter. Calyptrae not seen.
