Brachythecium angustirete Broth., Rev. Bryol. Lichenol. 2: 11. 1929. Type: CHINA. Formosa [Taiwan]: Mt. Ari, on tree, 25 Dec 1925, J. Suzuki (ex herb. Sasaoka no. 3881) (holotye h, isotype tns)- Cf Koponen (1967).
Eurhynchium zetterstedtii Stormer, Nytt Mag. Naturvidensk. 83: 84, fig. 2a-d. 1942 (''Zetterstedtii").
Redfeam and Wu (1986) give Eurhynchium angustirete as a synonym of E. striatum (Hedw.) Schimp. However, since the description of E. zetterstedtii by Stormer (1942), the species has been generally accepted as distinct from E. striatum at the specific level (e.g., Abolin, 1968; Andersen et al., 1976; Frahm & Frey, 1983; Nyholm, 1965; Petrov, 1975) or at the subspecific level (Orban & Vajda, 1983) in European floras. Moreover, there are many papers dealing with the distribution and taxonomy of E. angustirete (=E. zetterstedtii) and E. striatum in various European countries (e.g., Bizot, 1960; Bizot et al., 1961; Casas de Puig, 1974; De Sloover, 1968; Koponen, 1964; Pospisil, 1980). Eurhynchium striatum s. str. is a European species and the records of it for East Asia should be credited to E. angustirete.
The distribution of Eurhynchium angustirete was mapped by Koponen (1967) and the presence of E. angustirete in Taiwan, China was confirmed by Koponen and Lai (1978). I can now report specimens from the mainland of China as well. In addition to the specimens seen by me from the Sichuan Province (Koponen & Lou, unpubl.), I have seen a specimen from Yunnan.
