Discussion
One leaf, 1.60-1.70 m, and two calyptrae, 1.45-1.56 m. The apiculate leaf apex and the basal marginal cells in 3-5 rows are considered diagnostic (Horton, 1983). However, the costa of the fossil leaf ends below the apiculus, which is an unusual condition in extant populations (cf, however, Horton, 1983, fig. 148). The calyptrae are tentatively referred to E. alpina based on the length of the rostrum (just over 1 mm) and its lack of papillae and abrupt differentiation from the cylinder. Diana Horton, who studed three other fragmentary specimens of Encalypta from 1.45-1.56 m , indicated that each might belong to a species other than E. alpina but that certain identifications were not possible (see Horton, 1982, p. 376).
