    Species Description - Stems creeping, closely and irregularly pinnate; branches commonly curved, subjulaceous, ± cuspidate-tipped. Stem leaves erect to loosely imbricate, moderately concave, smooth or ± plicate, 1-1.5 mm long, oblong-ovate, somewhat apiculate, decurrent; costae slender, short; cells at basal angles large, lax, and inflated. Branch leaves 0.8-1.2 mm long, more crowded and more closely appressed, smooth to distinctly plicate when dry. Setae 15-25 mm long; capsules 2-3 mm long.

    Most plants so-named from Guatemala and those from Costa Rica [Fig. 790e-h] are rather more robust, with more distant branching and apparently more erect growth; the leaves are not decurrent; the alar cells are scarcely differentiated, fewer, smaller, and scarcely inflated; and the costae are a good bit longer. They should be referred to Elmeriobryum guatemalense Rohrer.

    On wet cliffs and boulders, trunks of trees, and soil of banks in most forests at aldtudes of 2000-2800 m; Durango, Hidalgo, Jalisco, Veracruz, reported from Michoacan.-Mexico; Guatemala; southeastern Asia and the Himalayas.
