    Species Description - Plants about 7-16 cm high. Stem leaves 1.8-2.4 mm long. Setae 20-43 mm long; capsules 2-2.5 mm long; cilia of endostome nodulose or, rarely, ± appendiculate. Spores 11-20 µm, very finely papillose.

    The species can be recognized by stoutly julaceous appearance, suberect, tufted manner of growth, and irregularly pinnate branching. The red stems showing through pale, green or yellowish leaves aid in recognition, as do thick-walled, orange-brown alar cells.

    On humus, soil, and other substrates in dry, exposed places and also in moist, coniferous forests; Veracruz (Mun. Calcahualco and Pico de Orizaba, 2700-3100 m alt.).—Mexico; Costa Rica; northern South America; Greenland to Alaska and south to North Carolina, Arkansas, Colorado, Idaho, and Oregon; across Europe and Asia.
