Description
Genus Description - Plants sympodial terrestrials. Roots fasciculate, thick, fleshy, villous. Leaves nonarticulate, several, basal or cauline. Inflorescence terminal, erect, scapose, racemose. Flowers somewhat tubular, resupinate. Ovary subsessile. Sepals similar, free, connivent, apices spreading; dorsal sepal concave; lateral sepals oblique, slightly gibbose at base. Petals adnate to margins of dorsal sepal. Lip sessile, basally conduplicate to gibbose, lamina conduplicate, arcuate, recurved, margins adnate to the sides of the column. Column short, stout; foot short, sometimes inconspicuous; stigmas approximate or confluent; rostellum rigid, linear-lanceolate to almost acicular; anther dorsal, narrowly ovate-lanceolate; pollinia 2, linear-clavate, mealy, attached to a linear-lanceolate, sheathlike viscidium. Fruit a capsule.

Discussion
Stenorrhynchos Richard ex Sprengel, Syst. Veg. 3: 709. 1826. Type species. Stenorrhynchos speciosum (Jacquin) Richard ex Sprengel based on Neottia speciosa Jacquin of Puerto Rico, Cuba, Jamaica, and Mexico to northern South America. A neotropical and subtropical genus of about 20 species (including Sacoila Rafinesque). The generic name refers to the narrow rostellum. Special Literature. Garay, 1980b; Balogh, 1982.
