    Species Description - Plants slender to robust, light-to yellow-green or yellow-brown. Stems prostrate, irregularly pinnate-branched; branches patent, sometimes flagelliform at the tips. Stem leaves falcate-secund or almost straight, ovate-or oblong-lanceolate, gradually narrowed to a long acumen or abruptly so to a snort acumen; margins subentire to sermlate above, sometimes recurved below; costae short or obscure; upper median cells 50-70(-80) x 3-5 µm; alar cells subquadrate to rectangular, 8-20 along the margins, larger toward the base, sometimes brown, a few cells at the extreme angles occasionally much enlarged and hyaline. Branch leaves narrower, oblong-lanceolate, with subquadrate alar cells 7-13 along the margins. Perichaetial leaves lanceolate, gradually narrowed to a slender, subentire acumen, smooth. Capsules suberect to inchned, red-brown, oblong-cylindric, weakly curved; operculum rostrate; cilia of endostome 1-2. Spores 15-20 µm, finely papillose. (Sporophytes unknown in Mexico.)

    Hypnum cupressiforme is characterized primarily by well-delimited alar groups consisting of many rather homogeneous, subquadrate to rectangular cells.

  • Distribution

    It is exceedingly common and variable in Europe, but in North America and Mexico it is not so common or so diversified. Mexican plants fall into two varieties.
