Description
Species Description - Plants medium-sized to fairly robust, yellow-green. Stems irregularly branched; branches ascending, short, blunt, tumid. Leaves erect and ± imbricate, very concave, 1.4-2.2 mm long, short- to long-acuminate; margins often reflexed above, entire; upper cells linear-fusiform, 5-15:1, thick-walled, somewhat shorter and broader at the apex; alar cells enlarged and inflated, oblong, colored; supra-alar cells large and hyaline, distinctly differentiated. Setae 10-30 mm long; capsules suberect to horizontal, up to 1 mm long; endostome segments perforate and cilia single or paired, shorter than the segments. Spores 8-12 µm, finely papillose.

This species, often confused in the past with 5. subpinnatum, has alar and supra-alar cells larger and apical cells longer. The leaves are generally long-acuminate and very concave.

Distribution
On trees, logs, and boulders in Acacia woodlands or oak-pine forests; Chiapas, Michoacan, Morelos, Nayarit, Oaxaca, Tamaulipas, Veracruz, Yucatan.—Mexico to northern South America; West Indies.
