  • Description

    Species Description - Stems up to 2 cm long and (with leaves) 1.5-2 mm wide. Leaves 0.8-1.5 mm long and 0.3-0.5 mm wide near the middle; upper cells 47-85 x 4-6 µm, becoming shorter near the apex; alar cells short-rectangular or sometimes quadrate. Setae 7-10 mm long; capsules 1-1.5 mm long; exostome teeth up to 500 pm long. Spores 9-12 µm in diameter.

    The plants are small, with rigid leaves scarcely altered when dry. The leaves are obtuse and densely serrate at the margins in the upper half; the cells have blunt, thickened ends giving an impression of papillose projections; the alar cells are usually distinctly differentiated.

    On sandstone or limestone rocks, rarely on trees, in shaded ravines and forests, often in or beside streams at elevations of 1000 m or less; Jahsco, Nayarit, Oaxaca, Puebla, San Luis Potosi, Tamaulipas, Veracruz, Yucatan.— Mexico to northern South America; West Indies.
