    Species Description - Plants small, in loose, green mats. Stems creeping, irregularly branched; branches short, prostrate to ascending, ± julaceous and somewhat tapered. Leaves concave, slightly plicate at base. Stem leaves 0.6-1 x 0.2-0.5 mm, broadly ovate to ovate-lanceolate, gradually to abmptly short-acuminate, decurrent; margins slightly recurved at base, serrate nearly throughout; costa slender, ending at or above the midleaf, occasionally as a dorsal spine; upper cells fusiform to linear-fusiform, flexuose, 26-60 x 3-7 µm; basal cells shorter and broader (15-35 x 5-14 µm); alar cells quadrate, many, in distinct groups extending up the margins, 5-22 x 6-15 µm. Branch leaves slightly smaller (0.4-0.9 x 0.1-0.4 mm), strongly concave, broadly ovate-lanceolate, short-acuminate; margins strongly serrate near the apex, sermlate near the base; costa frequently ending as a spine. Autoicous. Perichaetial leaves sheathing, up to 1.8 mm long. Setae 9-12 mm long, yellow-brown, reddish with age, smooth or occasionally weakly papillose; capsules inclined, curved, 1.1-2 x 0.5-0.8 mm, ovoid, contracted below the mouth when dry; annulus of 2 layers of enlarged cells; operculum 0.2-0.6 mm long; cilia of endostome 2, nodose or sometimes appendiculate. Spores 9-13 µm, nearly smooth.

    On rocks and soil, in dry to moist areas, 1000-3000 m alt.; Baja California; reported from Chihuahua and very likely occurring elsewhere along the U.S. border.—Mexico; Argentina; western United States (including all the states adjacent to Mexico); western Canada; Greenland; Europe; northern and central Asia; Japan.
