    Species Description - Plants of medium size, in loose, yellow-green to brownish mats. Stems creeping, short or elongate, straight or ± curved, irregularly branched; branches ascending, short, julaceous, ± attenuate. Stem leaves imbricate to erect when dry, erect or spreading w h e n moist, 0.9-1.6 x 0.3-0.5 mm, ovate-lanceolate and acuminate to elongate-triangular; margins reflexed at base, entire throughout or sermlate above; costa about 7/8 or more the leaf length, ending in a spine or with several spines in the upper third, occasionally with a cluster of rhizoids at the base; upper median cells 40-100 x 4—6 µm; inner basal and alar cells quadrate to rounded, thick-walled, 4 - 1 5 x 5 - 12 µm, extending 4—6 cells up the costa and the margins and extending upward 8-12 cells along the plicae. Branch leaves strongly plicate, 0.5-1.2 x 0.1-0.3 mm, ovate-lanceolate, acuminate, becoming narrowly acute to obtuse toward the branch tips; costa serrate in the upper third and ending in a spine; cells near the leaf apex often papillose because of projecting end walls. Setae red, 10-20 mm long, papillose below; capsules 1-1.8 x 0.5-0.7 mm, cylindric; operculum up to 0.7 mm long; cilia of endostome 1-2. Spores 10-15 µm.
