The plants grow in very wet places and have stems and branches noticeably cuspidate-tipped because of crowded and imbricate leaves. The costa is short and double or lacking, and the alar cells are conspicuously inflated.

Distribution
Known in Mexico from a single plant in mixture with Drepanocladus aduncus in a marshy place below the Iturbide dam, 37 km W of San Mateo Nopala, Mexico (TENN).—Mexico; Jamaica; widespread in Europe and eastern North America south to Tennessee and North Carolina; Japan; New Zealand.
