  Genus Description - Plants small and slender, in thin, dull, green, yellowish, or brownish mats, often in wet places. Stems creeping, irregularly branched. Leaves small, erect- to wide-spreading when moist, ovate or lanceolate, gradually to rather abmptly acuminate; margins plane, entire or ± sermlate; costa rather slender, ending at or above the leaf middle, sometimes disappearing in the acumen; cells thin- or firm-walled, smooth, oblong-rhombic or oblong-hexagonal, those at the base somewhat longer, the alar cells subquadrate to short-rectangular in small, poorly marked groups. Autoicous. Perichaetial leaves erect, lance-acuminate, weakly plicate.

• Discussion

  The plants, often in swampy habitats, are small and slender. The leaves are short-celled, and the single costa is relatively slender and often rather short. Hygroamblystegium differs, above all, in having a longer, stouter costa.
