    Species Description - Leaves 0.28-0.4 mm long, 0.12-0.19 mm wide, ovate-lanceolate, short- to long-acuminate on the same shoot; costa 1 cell thick above, 2 cells thick below; upper cells 12.5-25 µm long, 2-4:1, usually smooth, very rarely with an occasional cell papillose at the upper end; alar cells quadrate to subquadrate (mostly longer than wide), ca. 7.5 µm wide, the decurrent cells in 1-2 rows, 15-25 µm long, 5-7.5 µm wide. Perichaetial leaves 0.45-0.7 mm long, 0.14-0.2 mm wide, commonly with elongate median cells. Setae 3-5 mm long; capsules 0.75-0.85 mm long; operculum long-rostrate, 0.5-0.6 mm long; endostome segments 140-175 µm long, appearing smooth. Spores 20-25 µm.

    When sterile, Austinia tenuinervis might be misidentified as Helicodontium capillare or Nematocladia tesserata, but the short costa separates it from either of those species. T he fragile stems of N . tesserata are also useful in separation.

    On tree trunks; Oaxaca, Tabasco, Veracruz.—Mexico; Cuba; Brazil and Peru; Borneo and the Philippines (as var. micholitzii).
