Description
Species Description - Stem leaves 0.45-0.6 mm long, ovate, acuminate; margins narrowly recurved in the lower 1/2-2/3, entire or occasionally ± serrulate near the apex; costa variable, usually ending at or below the midleaf but often nearly lacking; upper cells 7-9 µm wide, irregularly rounded to somewhat longer than broad (rarely more than 1.5:1), smooth or somewhat bulging at back. Branch leaves smaller, 0.3-0.5 mm long, less sharply pointed; margins commonly plane or somewhat recurved below; costa often completely lacking. (Apparently not fruiting in North America or Mexico.)

The plants are very small. The leaves are acuminate, and the costa is extremely variable—usually short, single, and branched from near the base, double, sometimes completely lacking (at least in branch leaves).

Distribution
On rock (generally calcareous in nature), in rather dry and often exposed places; Baja California (Ensenada, Steere 17682) and Mexico (Rio Frio, fide Bowers et al., 1973). Northwestern Mexico; Newfoundland, Quebec, Ontario, and northern Michigan; Nebraska; Yukon and British Columbia, south to Arizona and New Mexico; northern and central Europe; central Asia; reported from Greenland and northern Alaska.
