    Species Description - Plants in green, brownish-green, blackish-brown, or red-brown mats. Stems up to 9 cm long and (with leaves) as much as 2.5 mm wide. Leaves crowded, imbricate, sometimes falcate, 1-2 mm long, elliptic to oblong- or linear-lanceolate, rounded at the apex and abruptly subulate; margins sharply serrulate or denticulate above or nearly to the base; costae strong, extending 1/2 to nearly the entire length of the leaf, toothed at back above, ending in a short, sharp point; upper cells oblong-hexagonal to linear, minutely seriate-papillose (with about 5 papillae per cell). Autoicous. Setae up to 30 mm long, smooth or minutely papillose at the tip or throughout. Spores 10-12 µm, smooth.

    On moist, rotten logs, 1920 m alt; Oaxaca (Sierra de Juarez above Tuxtepec, Sharp 3771, TENN; 79 km SW of Tuxtepec on Hwy. 175, Manuel 175, TENN).—Mexico; Honduras, Costa Rica, and Panama; northern South America.
