Description
Species Description - Stems up to 8 cm long and (with leaves) up to 4 mm wide. Leaves oblong-ovate, ± asymmetric, short-acuminate and often keeled at the tip; margins serrulate above or nearly throughout; upper cells 7-20:1. Setae 10 mm long, scabrous above; peristome hyaline or yellowish.

Crossomitrium scabrisetum Bartr. of Guatemala has oblong to elliptic leaves strongly shriveled when dry and setae scabrous throughout. Crossomitrium epiphyllum (Mitt.) C. Müll. (C oerstedianum C. Müll.), ranging from Guatemala to Ecuador and the West Indies, has orbicular and very shortly pointed leaves and sporophytes papillose only above.
