    Species Description - Plants small, green or yellowish to brownish. Leaves erect-spreading and flexuose to ± crisped when dry, about 1-1.5 mm long, oblong or lingulate, broadly rounded or truncate and abruptly short-pointed; margins serrulate in the upper 1/2 or more; costae toothed at back above; upper cells small, irregularly isodiametric, unipapillose. Polygamous. Setae 6-8(-20) mm long, ± scabrous throughout (or sometimes smooth); capsules ca. 1 mm long. Spores 8-11 µm, smooth or nearly so. Calyptrae scabrous, laciniate at base.

    Callicostella vatteri Bartr. known only from Guatemala, has broadly rounded or rounded-obtuse leaves with smooth cells and costa nearly reaching the apex and ending in a few small teeth.

  • Distribution

    On wet logs and stumps at low altitudes (150-1100 m); Chiapas, Oaxaca, Puebla, Tabasco, Veracruz.—Mexico to northern South America; West Indies; Florida and Louisiana. According to Cardot (1911), Bescherelle's report of Hookeria scabriseta Hook, can be referred here (actually to the synonymy of Callicostella cruceana).
