Description
Genus Description - Plants slender to medium-sized, in dull, dark-green, yellowish, or brownish, flat mats. Stems creeping, regularly or irregularly pinnate. Leaves inserted in 8 rows, ± complanate, often ± incurved or crisped when dry, somewhat asymmetric, broadly oblong, lingulate, or oblong-ovate, rounded or rounded-obtuse and often minutely apiculate to short-acuminate at the apex, not bordered; margins plane, crenulate, serrulate, or serrate above, rarely entire; costae 2, strong, divergent at the base, convergent above and ending near the apex, usually toothed at back above; cells rounded or shortly oblong-hexagonal, mostly firm- or thick-walled, smooth or unipapillose, oblong and smooth at the base. Perichaetial leaves smaller and narrower, otherwise scarcely differentiated. Setae ± elongate, red, smooth or papillose to bristly; capsules horizontal, oblong-cylindric, short-necked, smooth; annulus none; operculum subulate from a convex base; exostome teeth lance-subulate, red-brown, broadly furrowed, densely cross-striolate below, papillose at the tips, with well-developed trabeculae projecting at the sides; endostome yellowish, finely papillose, consisting of a high basal membrane, lance-subulate, keeled segments about as long as the teeth, and no cilia. Calyptrae short-lobed to laciniate, ± scabrous above, naked.
