  Genus Description - Caespitose perennials. Inflorescence a contracted panicle. Spikelets lanceolate, 1-flowered, awnless, glabrous, delicately membranous, disarticulating from glumes; glumes unequal, much shorter than floret, veinless or at least upper 1-veined; lemma 1-veined; palea subequal to lemma. Fruit with a free seed, this often extruded from pericarp.
