    Genus Description - Plants of moderate to robust stature, in dull or less often shiny, green or yellowish mats. Secondary stems dendroid, irregularly to subpinnately branched above a ± stipitate base; branches tumid; paraphyllia none. Leaves erect-spreading not or only slightly flattened, symmetric, ovate-lanceolate to oblong-ovate, acute; margins usually coarsely serrate at the apex; costa strong, single, subpercurrent; cells smooth, straight-walled, rounded- to oblong-hexagonal or sometimes longer above, becoming longer below, not or scarcely differentiated at the basal angles. Setae elongate; capsules long-exserted, usually inclined to pendent, symmetric or nearly so, cylindric; annulus present; exostome teeth lanceolate, fused at base, cross-striolate below, hyaline and papillose above, trabeculate at back; endostome consisting of a high basal membrane, keeled and perforate, lanceolate segments and well-developed, often appendiculate cilia in pairs. Calyptrae cucullate, naked.
