  • Description

Species Description - Caespitose epiphytes, Pseudobulbs ovate to ovate-oblong, compressed, subtended by pair of prominent chartaceous bracts, to 6 X 3 cm. Leaves 1 per pseudobulb, ligulate-oblong, coriaceous, obtuse to obliquely emarginate, petiolate, to 40 X 5 cm. Inflorescences multiple solitary flowers on basal scapes, variable in length to ±10 cm, enclosed for length by compressed tubular bracts. Flowers campanulate, dull pale brown, variably suffused with red, lip whitish with purplish markings and dark apex; sepals and petals subsimilar with petals shorter and narrower than sepals, ligulate to ligulateoblong, abruptly acute, concave, to 25 X 7 mm; lip 3-lobed, to 16 X 13 mm, the lateral lobes obliquely oblong, obtuse, the midlobe elliptic to subrotund, crenulate, the callus basal, linear to midpoint of lip; column short, erect, 7 mm long. According to Carnevali (pers. comm.), M. porrecta appears to be the earliest name for Guianan plants in the very confusing M. brunnea Linden & Reichenbach f. complex. Maxillaria porrecta has been reported also from the Guianas by its later Brazilian synonym, M. leucaimata Barbosa Rodrigues.
